A man has died and a woman has been critically injured after falling from cliffs in Jersey.

Emergency Services were alerted to the accident by a member of the public at about 17:00 BST.

The man and woman fell about 40ft (12m) from cliffs in St Aubin on to the concrete roof of the German tunnels below Railway Walk.

The woman, who was taken to Jersey General Hospital, suffered potentially life-threatening head injuries.

'Tragic accident'

Jersey Fire and Rescue, police and paramedics were at the scene of the accident, which has been cordoned off.

It is thought the couple were in Jersey on holiday. The man was in his 60s and the woman is in her 50s.

Eye witnesses said the man appeared to lose his footing before he fell. The woman managed to grab onto some tree branches, but moments later she fell too.

An investigation by the States of Jersey Police has begun.

A police spokesman told BBC News: "It appears to have been a tragic accident, but we are keeping an open mind."
