Jersey Met Department issue severe weather warning

Jersey's Met Department has issued a severe weather warning for the island over the next two days.

Forecasters said the island will experience gale force nine winds and heavy downpours later and on Thursday morning.

The fire service has asked homeowners to pack away garden furniture and make everything secure.

Station commander Marc Le Cornu said people should stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

Mr Le Cornu said that severe weather put the service under strain and asked for people to understand the limitations of the service.

He said: "Remember that many items get thrown around by high winds and roof tiles and branches can be dislodged with the potential to cause serious harm.

"It is also important to remember that many injuries occur after the storm with people being hit by falling debris that has been loosened but not yet fallen, so please be extra vigilant when out and about and stay safe."
