Jersey solicitor cycles 1,280 miles for cancer charity

A Jersey solicitor has cycled 1,280 miles in a fortnight to raise money for a cancer charity.

Peter Jackson, 58, pedalled to his firm's office in Zurich and back, covering almost 100 miles a day.

He organised the cycle ride as he recently lost both his father, Steve Jackson, and his secretary of many years, Wendy Tuckwood, to cancer within a few months of one another.

Mr Jackson raised £3,500 for the charity Cancer Research.

He said: "Cancer is a terrible disease and I wanted to do something meaningful to raise much needed funds for this amazing charity."

During the trip, he kept a blog where he shared his experiences.

'Quite squashy'

In it he said: "I have cycled in all weather conditions from 30 degree sunshine to strong headwinds, heavy rain and snowy mountain roads."

Mr Jackson said he ate mostly pizza and bread and jam, as the restaurants in the towns and villages on the way were closed when he stopped cycling for the day.

He said: "I was exhausted but the adrenaline kept me going.

"The journey was possibly the 14 hardest, yet mostly enjoyable, days I can remember."

He said it was great to know his colleagues at Hawksford Law were supporting him.

They manned two exercise bikes in their St Helier office reception, raising further money for charity.

Chief executive Peter Murley said: "We are all very proud of Peter, he has achieved an amazing feat and has overcome many challenges, including a severe lack of suitable food.

"It is great to have him back in the office, where the team presented him with a pizza - which he said he won't eat, but may sit on as it looked quite squashy and more inviting than a bicycle saddle."

Mr Jackson said his next plan was to cycle around Corsica.
