It is hoped a trainee probation officer's work placement in Madeira will develop links between the islands.

Jersey's Chief Probation Officer Brian Heath said it was the first cross-jurisdictional placement outside the British Isles.

He said it was important to build a relationship with Madeira.

Maurilia Veloso's three-month placement in Madeira is part of her social work degree at Aberdeen's Robert Gordon University.

Ms Veloso's family is from Madeira but she was born in Jersey.

'Building relations'

She said she was looking forward to finding out how the different jurisdictions operate and hoped it would help her develop her career.

Ms Veloso said: "I am really excited about the placement and the chance it will provide to explore the similarities and the differences in the work that we do and the procedures which are in place."

Mr Heath said: "It offers us the chance to learn about other services and techniques.

"Sharing best practice is extremely important and building relations with Madeira would be useful for both their service and ours."
