The captain of a Northern Ireland-registered trawler caught fishing unlawfully for king scallops in Manx waters has been fined £8,000.

The vessel, Provider, was detained in Port St Mary after being spotted fishing without a licence five miles south east of Chicken Rock lighthouse.

John Baldwin of Kilkeel, County Down, admitted fishing without a licence at Douglas courthouse.

The High Baliff also ordered the 40-year-old to forfeit his catch.

Environment Minister Geoffrey Boot said the size of the fine demonstrates how seriously the Isle of Man views fishing conservation.
