Police warned the public to remove all vehicles from promenade areas and to make sure vulnerable properties were protected with sandbags

The department of transport said during the evening of 2 January more than 10,000 sandbags were issued to both residential and commercial properties

Government staff had their leave cancelled and the Civil Defence deployed more than 40 volunteers to help those worst affected

The government said the clean-up would begin as soon as the flood waters started to recede
