Foreign aid based on need not ideology
A Manx politician has stressed that foreign aid should be governed by humanitarian principles rather than by a political or ideological viewpoint.
MHK Phil Gawne, chair of the Overseas Aid Committee, said some people objected to the money sent to flood-stricken Pakistan, a nuclear power.
However, he said it should be down to an assessment of the needs of the people.
"We should not be looking at whether a government is to blame," he said.
The Rushen MHK said that the committee sometimes faced "hard" decisions on where to send aid, but even if a government was corrupt, or ignored the needs of its people it was not up to the committee to judge.
"We should be looking to assist all people internationally regardless of whether there is a government to blame."
