Warning over computer expert con in Isle of Man
People purporting to be computer experts are gleaning Manx residents' details to commit identity fraud, the government has warned.
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has said bogus callers claim residents' computers have a virus and offer to clean the "infected" machines.
Instead they steal bank details and other personal information.
Chairman of the OFT, Bill Henderson MHK said the offenders were "very very clever con people".
He told those who believe they are being hounded by these "computer technicians" should contact the OFT, their local MHK or even the police if necessary.
He added: "Consumers should be very careful to ensure that they know who they are dealing with.
"It is likely that these people are trying to get you to hand over personal or financial information as well as money.
"If this information gets into the wrong hands it can be disastrous for you."
