Search for overboard seaman in Channel called off

The search for a Ukranian seaman believed to have fallen overboard from a merchant ship in the English Channel has been called off.

The man, believed to have fallen from the ship late on Saturday night, has not been found.

A coastguard helicopter from the UK and two French aircraft conducted an "intensive" five-hour search.

It is believed the man went overboard from a tanker between the Channel Islands and the south coast of England.

French coastguard authorities co-ordinated the search and said they began looking around 07:00BST and called off the operation at 12:30BST.

The vessel was an 80-metre tanker sailing from Liverpool to the Netherlands.
