Channel Islands told to expect storms imminently

A "red" gale force warning has been issued for the Channel Islands.

The Jersey Meteorological Department Office said winds of up to 70mph are imminent and crosswinds are affecting flights in and out of the island.

Severe gales are expected to hit the coast, with a possible thunderstorm on Wednesday night, a spokesman said.

Both islands have been hit hard by the extreme weather, with waves of up to 40ft damaging sea walls and flooding properties along the coast.

The Minister of the Home Department, Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq commended the efforts following storms that left coastal areas damaged and homes flooded during a spell of high tides, strong winds and heavy rain.
