Guernsey States considers solar panel sites

Plans to erect solar panels near Guernsey's airport and possibly float some on the island's reservoir are being investigated by the Commerce and Employment Department.

The proposals for the airport include erecting three acres of panels.

However, minister Kevin Stewart said the States needed to establish if panels would dazzle aircraft pilots.

He said data would be collected for up to eight months before any decision was made.

He said: "Hopefully, if it's proven that we can we do can something [near the airport], that will be an ideal site and the airport can use that power directly.

He said suggestions to use former vineries for solar farms were not likely under current planning regulations because it would mean officially having to change the registered use of such land from agricultural to light industrial.
