Former Guernsey governor Sir John Martin dies

Vice Admiral Sir John Martin KCB DSC, a former Lieutenant Governor of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, has died at the age of 93.

Sir John, who served in his post in the islands from 1974 to 1980, is survived by his wife Rosemary.

Before taking up the post he served in the Royal Navy for more than 30 years.

His service in World War II as a young lieutenant saw him awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

He was awarded it for "steadfast courage and skill in a dangerous and important minesweeping operation" in December 1943 while serving aboard the HMS Rhyl.
