Islanders asked to clear drains by States Works

Guernsey householders have been asked to take more responsibility for drains near their homes.

States Works said heavy downpours and people throwing fat down drains had led to an increase in the number blocked.

Malcolm Cleal, senior manager of services, said a few simple steps could save taxpayers' money in the long-run.

He said: "We're not asking people to put themselves in danger... but sometimes it's just a case of moving a few leaves."

Mr Cleal added: "The other thing is we would really strongly suggest people think carefully before they wash things off their property on to the main road, as it has to go somewhere and it ends up in the drain."
