Guernsey States Works saving grit for 'severe weather'

A new gritting agent has been saved for use in "severe weather", Guernsey States Works has said.

Nigel Dorey, general manager, said: "The intention is to deploy CMA 40 in more prolonged severe conditions than we have seen in the past few days."

He said it can be used in water catchment areas without contaminating the supply.

The substance is due to be used in tandem with rock salt in St Peter Port and road gritting on major routes.

Mr Dorey said: "It is best deployed in more critical weather such as that which we experienced last February."

He said States Works continued to monitor road conditions at 0530 GMT each morning during snow and ice warning periods.
