A company that supplies building products has been fined for polluting a river in County Londonderry.

Northstone NI Ltd of Kingsway, Dunmurry, County Antrim was fined £15,000.

It followed the discharge of a concentrated sand solution into a tributary of the River Roe near Dungiven.

Inspectors went to the site in December 2014 after a complaint.

The source of the pollution was traced back to a sandpit run by the company.

The company's discharge licence restricted any effluent to no more than 50mg of suspended solids per litre.

Samples showed a suspended solids level of 9,800mg.

The company was fined £7,500 for making a polluting discharge to the White Burn, a tributary of the Black Burn and River Roe.

It was fined a further £7,500 for a breach of its discharge licence.
