In pictures: Cyprus blast
An enormous explosion has ripped through a munitions dump at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Zygi, Cyprus.
Emergency workers found victims' bodies scattered around the site of the blast. The force of the explosions shattered windows in the nearby fishing village of Zygi.
The explosives held at the base had been confiscated from a ship travelling from Iran to Syria, which Cypriot authorities impounded two years ago.
The fire spread to the island's main power station, knocking out power supplies to several areas.
Authorities urged people to limit their power consumption, at a time of a peak demand during a heat wave.
The cause of the blast is unclear but officials have ruled out sabotage. Cyprus's defence minister and national guard chief have resigned.
