A fire in a shopping centre in northern China has killed at least 19 people, state media reported.

The fire in the city of Jilin burned for 12 hours before being put out, the official Xinhua news agency said.

At least another 27 people were injured but none of them seriously, a city official said.

An investigation had been launched and the general manager of the complex has been held for questioning, Xinhua reported.

The fire broke out at about 0915 local time (0115 GMT) on Friday.

The shopping centre was built in the 1980s and most of the stores sold clothes or electrical goods.
