In pictures: US-South Korea war games
The US and South Korean navies are continuing to carry out large scale military exercises in the Sea of Japan, in a bid to present a show of power to North Korea amid rising regional tensions.
On the third day of the drills, the allies used live fire to practice destroying submarines or deterring attacks by small ships, South Korean officials said. Some 8,000 personnel, 20 ships and 200 aircraft are involved.
The drills come after a multi-national investigation blamed North Korea for the sinking of a South Korean warship, the Cheonan, in March this year, with the loss of 46 sailors' lives.
North Korea, which denies the charge, has heavily criticised the war games, calling them "gunboat diplomacy", while China has expressed "deep concern" and urged all sides to remain calm.
While military officials stress the drills are routine, some South Koreans have also objected, saying they will only increase tensions between the old enemies and make conflict more likely.
