Work has begun to transform a derelict industrial area in Port Talbot into a "green oasis".

A new riverside walk and park at Green Park will include a footpath, seating area and planting, Neath Port Talbot council said.

Local contractors Afan Landscapes hopes to complete the first phase of the project by April.

The work is being funded by the Welsh government's Vibrant and Viable Places programme.

Neath Port Talbot council leader Ali Thomas said: "Riverside Walk will provide a green oasis in what had become an increasingly derelict area.

"The scheme, together with the new housing being built on Green Park, will transform the area, creating a pleasant place for people to relax and an additional link to the town centre."
