A new £7.5m advanced engineering research centre in Port Talbot will help growth after the "severe blow" of losing hundreds of steel jobs, the first minister has said.

Carwyn Jones said work on TWI Technology Centre's new site at Harbourside Business Park starts soon.

It will carry out research in sectors such as aerospace, electronics and nuclear and renewable energy.

The project, funded by European Union money, will create 16 jobs.

Last week, Tata Steel announced more than 1,000 jobs would go at its plants.

Port Talbot bore the brunt of those cuts, with 750 jobs being axed.

Mr Jones said: "I am pleased we can bring business growth and new highly-skilled jobs to Port Talbot after the severe blow to the community last week."
