Plans to finance and build a war memorial to a town's fallen soldiers have moved closer but some supporters have criticised its location.

Residents in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taff, set up a committee in 2009 to realise their ambitions.

But an application to put the memorial at the Bull Ring in "old" Llantrisant has led some to say the site is too busy with other locations suggested.

The committee chairman said many people preferred the town centre location.

Llantrisant councillor Glynne Holmes said the main reason the location was picked was because lots of people pass by and would be able to see it.

Local historians said the town and surrounding villages have never had a memorial to all those who died in war, although a plaque in the church shows some of their names.

An online petition opposing the proposed location has collected more than 200 names.

The council has yet to make a decision on the plans.
