Dozens of jobs are under threat at a south Wales food factory.

St Merryn Foods announced on Thursday that 88 jobs could go at its Merthyr Tydfil plant.

The company is entering a 45-day consultation period over plans to restructure the company following a drop in packing volume in the past year.

About 1,000 people are employed in south Wales and the company said this was "the last and regrettable option".

St Merryn Foods packs beef and lamb at three sites in the UK; Cornwall, Bodmin and Merthyr Tydfil.

A spokesman said different ways will be explored to avoid redundancies, including transfers to other businesses within the group.
