Parc Prison juvenile unit, Bridgend, praised by inspectors

The juvenile unit at Bridgend's Parc Prison has been praised following an unannounced inspection.

It was deemed to be a safe environment with good security, with levels of violence judged as being "very minor".

Inspectors also found low levels of self harm and hardly any drug use, while relationships between staff and prisoners, who are all under 18, were "excellent".

Prisons chief inspector Nick Hardwick said staff lead a good example.

"The unit is well led and the attitude of staff is key to its success," he said.

"Young people are not collectively seen as a problem or blamed, and the culture is not punitive. On the contrary, staff set clear boundaries and work legitimately with young people."

The prison is run by private security contractor G4S.
