Gas meter thefts hit Merthyr and Aberdare homes

Residents have been left without hot water and heating following a spate of gas meter thefts in Merthyr Tydfil.

Thieves have struck in five different streets in the last 10 days, while a similar incident has also been reported in Aberdare.

Officers said the meters had been "recklessly ripped" from outside homes, leaving pipes dangerously exposed.

They suspect the offenders have been stealing the units for scrap metal or to sell on.

Incidents in Merthyr have been reported in High Street, Alexandra Road, Holly Way, Cyfarthfa Mews, and Penderyn Close.

Officers are linking these incidents and the one in Aberdare, and are warning that the thieves are likely to strike again.

They are appealing for information that will help them make arrests and prevent further thefts.

Anyone with information can call South Wales Police on 101.
