Rhymney river rescue after woman's car plunges at Machen

A woman has been pulled to safety from the river Rhymney after her car left the road and plunged into the water.

The woman was taken to hospital following the incident on Commercial Road in Machen, near Caerphilly, at around 07:00 GMT on Thursday.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent crews from Duffryn, Newport, while a rescue tender from Malpas used lines to save the woman.

The woman was assessed by paramedics at the scene before going to hospital.

In a separate incident on the same street at the same time, the fire service said a woman was taken to hospital suffering from suspected back injuries after a collision.
