Cardiff BHS: Queen Street British Home Stores to close

A department store which has had a presence in Cardiff city centre for decades is to close.

The Queen Street branch of retail chain BHS (British Home Stores) will close and a new site for the shop will be sought.

It is understood the branch will close in late January 2013.

BHS, owned by Arcadia Group, said staff will be redeployed within other BHS and Arcadia stores. A second BHS in Cardiff Bay Retail Park is not affected.

BHS, which sells clothing and household items, currently employs an estimated 160 to 200 people.

According to Wales Online - the website of the Western Mail and South Wales Echo - workers were told a new smaller store may open in Cardiff about six months after the closure of the Queen Street branch.

A spokesperson for the Arcadia Group said: "BHS can confirm that the BHS store is closing and that the BHS Home store is unaffected.

"BHS [is] currently looking for a new site in Cardiff and will redeploy staff within the chain and other Arcadia brands where possible."
