Ebbw Vale: Gwent PC Rowan Helps, 32, found dead

A 32-year-old Gwent Police officer has been found dead at a property in Ebbw Vale.

Officers were called to Lillian Grove at 13:54 BST on Thursday after a body was discovered by ambulance staff.

The death of PC Rowan Helps is being treated as unexplained but officers are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

Police said he was the subject of an ongoing investigation and had been suspended from duty.

Deputy chief constable Jeff Farrar said it was a "tragic situation" and thoughts were with the family.

"We are currently investigating the circumstances of the death and would appeal to anyone who might be able to assist to contact Gwent Police by dialling 101," he said.

PC Helps had been an officer for five years and covered the northern half of the Gwent force area.

Gwent Police said: "The deceased officer was the subject of an ongoing investigation, had been suspended from duty, and was on police bail.

"As he was a serving officer under investigation, a referral has been made to the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission)."

PC Helps's family have been receiving support from liaison officers.

The family said in a statement: "We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Gwent Police, and especially the family liaison officers for their support.

"Their consideration and sensitivity goes far and above the call of duty - Rowan would have been proud of you.

"While grateful for the support of family and friends, we would ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time."

The IPCC said it had asked for further details from Gwent Police.

"Once the additional material has been received we will determine what level of involvement, if any, there needs to be from the IPCC in any investigation," said a spokesperson.
