Man found dead, Derek Mahoney, was 'a gentleman'

A 61-year-old man found dead outside a property in Merthyr Vale has been described as an "all-round nice guy" by his family.

The body of Derek Mahoney was discovered at Mount Pleasant in the early hours of Friday.

Police said at the time they were treating it as murder and have appealed again for information.

A 47-year-old local man was questioned in relation to the incident and has been released on police bail.

In a family tribute, Mr Mahoney's brother Richard and nephew James said he was "a gentleman, who was very placid and an all-round nice guy".

Detectives are appealing for anyone aware of Mr Mahoney's movements between 1800 GMT on Wednesday 26 January and 0700 GMT on Friday 28 January to contact them.

Det Ch Insp Richie Jones, from the South Wales Police major crime investigation team, said: "Anyone who thinks they may have information they believe may be relevant should contact the inquiry team.

"We have a full team of officers who are working hard to try and piece together the circumstances surrounding Derek's death."
