Prince Charles to meet Ryder Cup captains at Newport

The Prince of Wales is to meet the two Ryder Cup captains and attend the launch show for the golf spectacular in Newport, it has been announced.

Prince Charles will have lunch wth the European and US captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin and tour the Celtic Manor Resort.

He will also attend the Welcome to Wales celebration concert at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on 29 September.

The 38th Ryder Cup between US and Europe takes place from 1-3 October.

The prince will attend part of the second official practice day on 29 September and will meet the respective team captains at The Twenty Ten Clubhouse.

Ryder Cup director Richard Hills said: "We are truly honoured that the Prince of Wales is to visit the Celtic Manor Resort during the week of the Ryder Cup.

"Having the contest stage in Wales for the first time is a huge honour for the country as a whole and we are delighted that His Royal Highness is able to join us and share in the celebrations."

After visiting the course Prince Charles will attend an official dinner at Cardiff Castle where Montogmerie and Pavin will introduce him to the 24 players who will make up the two teams.

He will continue on to the Welcome to Wales concert where one of the prince's favourite performers, Dame Shirley bassey, will be among the entertainers.

Classical singer Katherine Jenkins and Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta Jones are also on the bill.

Pontypridd rock band Lostprophets Swansea singer Shaheen Jafargholi and Only Men Aloud are among the other acts taking part.

The European and US golf teams will also attend.

The Ryder Cup is staged every two years, alternating between venues in Europe and the United States, and it is the first time it has been held in Wales.
