An 87-year-old woman has died after a fire at her home in Colwyn Bay, Conwy.

A joint investigation by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and North Wales Police is under way.

Emergency services were called to the end terrace bungalow at 0744 GMT on Tuesday after an automated 'careline' service was activated.

The property was "well alight" when fire fighters arrived. They used a thermal imaging camera to find the woman inside.

"This is the second fire in a week in which a similar system has activated to alert us to a fire - but sadly for this lady, the fire was already well developed," said Gareth Griffiths from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire fighters will be in the Colwyn Bay area on Tuesday raising awareness of fire safety, and offering free home safety checks to the public, he added.

A 69-year-old woman died in hospital last week after she was rescued from a house in Holywell when a similar careline system was activated.
