Eirian Thomas jailed for stealing from mother

A woman has been jailed for 20 months for stealing £59,000 from her mother who had dementia.

Eirian Thomas, 47, from Wrexham, admitted taking the money from her mother's bank account between January 2009 and August 2012.

While Thomas stole the money, her mother's unpaid care home fees reached £93,000, Caernarfon Crown Court heard.

Judge Merfyn Hughes QC said Thomas's mother had been "vulnerable". She died last year.

He added: "This is a very sad case.

"It's at least some mercy she never became aware of what you were doing."

The court heard Thomas, an NHS worker, earned £30,000 a year.

A proceeds of crime application will be made to try to recover the money.

Dafydd Roberts, defending, said Thomas had been spending beyond her means.
