Jail for new year rape of girl, 16, in Powys

A man has been jailed for seven years for raping a 16-year-old girl as she walked home from a nightclub in Powys on New Year's Day.

Richard Waines, 29, from Llandrindod Wells, was sentenced at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court after admitting rape.

The attack took place early on New Year's Day as the teenager walked home from the Venue nightclub.

The court heard how the girl tried to escape across a fast-flowing river, but Waines caught her.

The 16-year-old girl had been on her way home to a friend's house after a New Year's Eve party at the Venue nightclub in Llandrindod Wells.

The court heard how Waines crept up behind her and grabbed her around the mouth, telling her to "shut up or I'll cut your throat".

Horrendous attack

He took her to a nearby riverbank where she begged to be let go, but Waines told the girl "shut up or I'll drown you in the river", the court was told.

The court heard that Waines attacked the teenager before she fled across the river, but he caught her and assaulted her again.

The court was told that the girl no longer sleeps alone, has to sleep with a light on and has nightmares.

Judge Eleri Rees said it was a horrendous attack and a terrifying ordeal for a 16-year-old.

She ordered that Waines spend an additional three years on licence, after serving his sentence. He will also be placed on the sex offenders register for life.

Waines had 15 convictions relating to 27 previous offences, but they were not for sexual offences, the court heard.
