A 20-year-old man has died and a 22-year-old man remains in a critical condition after a car hit a tree.

Ryan Hamer died from his injuries when the Toyota Yaris came off the A4059 between Aberdare and Mountain Ash just after midnight.

His family described him as a "kind, helpful and loving young man" who would be "extremely missed".

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the crash to contact them.

Two other men in the car, aged 19 and 22, were taken to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.

They have been treated for non-life threatening injuries, South Wales Police said.

'Wonderful son'

Mr Hamer's family, who are being supported by specially trained officers, paid tribute to him in a statement.

"Ryan - a wonderful son, brother, uncle and boyfriend," the statement read.

"He loved music especially playing the drums in his band, Rapture.

"He enjoyed going on snowboarding holidays with his friends when he wasn't working as a swimming and gym instructor in his local leisure centre.

"Ryan was a kind, helpful and loving young man and he is going to be extremely missed by all who knew and love him."

The 22-year-old in a critical condition is being treated at the University Hospital of Wales.
