Police investigating a violent attack on an elderly woman in her own home are trying to trace a purse.

The 72-year-old was found with serious head injuries at her home on Garnswllt Road, Pontarddulais, at about 08:15 GMT on Wednesday. She remains in hospital.

Officers want to trace a green and purple leather purse they believe is missing - and identify a man seen in the area at the time of the attack.

He is described as a white man wearing a hood and carrying a backpack.

Det Insp Matthew Davies said: "We are grateful to members of the public who have contacted us already, and I would urge anyone who thinks they may have information which could help to call 101.

"I would like to hear from anyone who saw a white male in his late teens or twenties in the vicinity on Wednesday morning.

"He was wearing a dark top with the hood up and was carrying what has been described as a backpack."
