Master Alexander Baird admits charge over crewman death

Mold Crown Court

The master of a fishing boat where a crewman was lost overboard has admitted a safety charge.

Steven Robertson, 25, was lost after the St Amant left Holyhead, Anglesey, for west Wales in January 2012.

The case against Alexander Baird, 55, from Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway, was brought under the Merchant Shipping Act.

Mr Baird was given bail with sentencing set for April at Mold Crown Court.

Mr Baird was charged with failing to discharge a duty to ensure the fishing boat, a Kirkcudbrightshire-based scallops dredger, was operated in a safe manner between November 2007 and April 2012.

Lifeboats and an Irish Sea ferry combed the waters in a search for Mr Robertson from Dalbeattie.
