Newport's southern distributor road reopens after boy hit by car

A major road in Newport which closed when an 11-year-old boy was seriously hurt after being hit by a car has reopened.

The city's southern distributor road was shut in both directions during the peak time rush period on Thursday.

It reopened later in the evening.

Gwent Police said the boy is in a critical condition in the Royal Gwent Hospital with a head injury after the incident at 15:20 GMT.

The incident, involving a a grey Fiat Stilo car, happened near Morrisons supermarket.

The force asked witnesses to contact 101.
