Search for gas under south Wales coalfield

A company is looking to carry out exploratory drilling at sites across south Wales in the search for Shale gas.

Some claim it could be as valuable to Wales as coal was in the past but opponents say the move is alarming because of serious safety issues raised in the Unites States.

Shale gas is transforming energy supplies in America and its thought the vast quantities of that same gas lies under the south Wales coalfield.

Drilling may take place from Llanelli in the west to Pontypool in the east.

Caroline Evans reports.
