Two police officers were rescued by helicopter after being cut off by the tide as they went to check a body found at the bottom of a cliff.
They were called to the shore at Southerndown, Vale of Glamorgan, following a report of a missing 57-year-old local woman.
A rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor airlifted the South Wales Police officers and the body from the scene.
The woman's death is not being treated as suspicious.
Supt Jay Dave, area commander for the Vale of Glamorgan, said: "Two police officers who made their way to the foot of the cliffs to check the body were cut off by high seas and an incoming tide.
"A rescue helicopter was called from RAF Chivenor which successfully evacuated both police officers and recovered the body.
"We would like to extend our sympathy to the family of the deceased."
The coroner has been informed.
