The RSPCA is investigating the death of a dog which had been shot in the head and left lying in deep water.

The mongrel was found near Fairwater Leisure Centre, off Waterhall Road, in Cardiff last week.

RSPCA inspector Selina Chan said: "This was a very nasty incident and the animal sustained horrific injuries before dying."

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a cat was shot with an airgun in Aberbargoed, Caerphilly county.

The cat was taken to a veterinary surgery for "urgent treatment".

The incident, described as sickening and barbaric by the RSPCA, took place on 25 October.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to contact the RSPCA on 0300 123 4999.
