CCTV images have been released of a man police want to speak to after an 83-year-old woman was attacked and robbed.

She had returned to her car in The Rhiw car park in Bridgend when she was pushed from behind and her handbag was taken at around 1640 BST last Thursday.

South Wales Police, who are appealing for witnesses, said the bag contained a large amount of cash.

Acting Det Insp Mark O'Shea said: "This was a cowardly attack upon an unsuspecting member of the public".

He added: "We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have seen the suspect fleeing from the scene.

"Events such as these are thankfully a rare occasion in Bridgend. We have a team of detectives working on this and we will do all we can to bring the perpetrator of this serious crime to justice."

South Wales Police said the woman was putting shopping onto the rear seat of her car when she was attacked on Thursday, 26 August.

Detectives said the suspect was a big-built white male in his 40s with dark hair, was whiskery, and possibly had a moustache.

He was wearing a navy blue jacket with red on it and carrying a blue and red rucksack-style bag.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Acting Det Insp Mark O'Shea at Bridgend CID on 01656 679518 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
