A pub near Falkirk has been badly damaged in a fire that started in the early hours of the morning.

Scottish Fire and Rescue said they were called to The Phoenix pub in the village of Whitecross at about 02:30.

Firefighters found a "well-developed" fire in the single-storey building, which is also used as a social club.

It is thought that no-one was inside and no injuries have been reported. Fire crews are still at the scene damping down the fire.

Appliances from Bo'ness and Falkirk fire stations were initially sent to tackle the blaze, with further crews later arriving from Linlithgow and Larbert.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "On arrival crews found a well-developed fire within a single-storey building being used as a pub and social club and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus immediately began tackling the blaze and searching for anyone inside.

"The incident is still ongoing and crews remain at the scene dampening down the fire to bring the incident to a safe resolution. Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service are also in attendance to help support ongoing operations and any subsequent investigation."
