Garry Donnan jailed for robbing blind 88-year-old woman

A man has been jailed for 32 months for robbing a registered blind 88-year-old woman in a Dundee car park.

Garry Donnan grabbed the pensioner's handbag and shoved her to the ground in a car park off Lochee High Street.

The 24-year-old shaved his head and beard and burned his clothes following the robbery in September, but was later found by police with a confession note in his pocket.

He will be kept under supervision for a year after release.

The pensioner was heading to the Lochee shops to buy milk at 15:15 on 14 September when Donnan pounced in the Tofthill car park.

He grabbed the woman's handbag and pulled it free, knocking her to the ground in the process. She had to be helped up by three passing children, and suffered grazing to her knee and elbow and neck pain.

At Dundee Sheriff Court, Donnan admitted assaulting and robbing his victim, having told police of his "regret" over "a moment of madness".

Sheriff Elizabeth Munro told Donnan she could only agree with background reports that he had an "impulsive and dangerous" side to his character.

She said: "This was a despicable offence against a very vulnerable elderly woman."
