Tayside Police have traced an inmate who failed to return to a prison near Dundee after a period of Christmas leave.

Raymond Byrne was due back at HMP Castle Huntly on 27 December after being granted temporary release to his home town of Irvine.

A public appeal for information was issued after the 47-year-old did not appear at the prison.

The force confirmed that Byrne was found in the early hours of Thursday.

Byrne, 47, was sentenced to 54 months imprisonment in May 2011 after being convicted of assault.

Tayside Police said they had received a confirmed sighting of him in Irvine town centre on the day he was due to return to Castle Huntly.
