A cow on the run from a slaughter house caused havoc for motorists after straying on to the A9 in Perthshire.

All access roads on to the Keir roundabout between Dunblane and Bridge of Allan were shut after the cow escaped from a nearby abattoir.

The A9 north and southbound, the access road to the M9 north, B824 to Doune and B8033 to Dunblane were also closed.

The cow was eventually shot in a nearby field by police marksmen.

Hundreds of motorists were delayed while officers tried to contain the Highland cow.

Central Scotland Police said they were alerted to the incident at about 1020 GMT.

All roads have since been reopened.
