Marine 'critical' after Arbroath car crash

A Royal Marine is in a critical condition after crashing a car into a telegraph pole near Arbroath.

The man's car rolled into a field after hitting the pole on the A933 near marine base RM Condor at 0300 GMT.

The 24-year-old, from Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, was taken to hospital suffering from a serious head injury, a broken leg and other internal injuries.

Tayside Police said there was no second person in the car, as earlier feared. No other vehicles were involved.

Intensive care

The road is closed while a full crash investigation is carried out.

A spokeswoman for Tayside Fire said crews had cut the marine free from the grey Vauxhall Astra, which was lying on its roof.

He was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee after being treated by paramedics at the scene.

A Tayside Police spokeswoman said: "He is currently in the intensive care unit where his condition is described as critical."

Anyone who saw the collision or the car prior to the crash is asked to contact police.
