Police say a fire which broke out in a garage and workshop in Lochmaben is being treated as "suspicious".

Emergency services were called out to the property on Castle Street at about 23:00 on Wednesday.

Residents in nearby houses had to be evacuated while crews from Dumfries and Lockerbie tackled the blaze.

Nobody was injured but the property was badly damaged and power supplies in the area were affected for some time after the fire.

Det Sgt Hugh McCombe said: "We are treating this fire as suspicious and are carrying out door to door inquiries in the immediate area.

"We are keen to speak to two men who were seen in the area of the garage in Castle Street around 23:00 last night.

"We also want to hear from anyone who may have been past the garage which is on Castle Street, not far from the junction with Welldale Place."
