Police have appealed for witnesses after an 80-year-old man was assaulted when a row between two dog owners in Coldstream escalated.

The incident happened at 13:00 on Tuesday on the town's High Street.

The 80-year-old was walking his Border terrier when it was approached by a Labrador which he tried to push away.

The Labrador owner then arrived and an altercation ensued which ended with the pensioner being pushed and falling onto a parked car.

PC Fraser Mortimer said: "This was an appalling incident which could have resulted in a very serious injury for the man who was very shaken but fortunately only slightly hurt.

"This was a busy time on the High Street and I'd urge anyone who saw what happened to come forward especially the people who helped the man after he fell."

The suspect has been described as male, in his 40s, around 5ft 7in or 5ft 8in tall, of slim build with messy hair and wearing a T-shirt and trousers.
