Galashiels man jailed over rugby player bottle attack

A Galashiels man who struck a rugby player over the head with a bottle outside a nightclub in the town has been jailed for nearly five months.

Samuel Wightman, 24, assaulted Gala RFC winger Craig Robertson in Overhaugh Street on 20 December last year.

At Selkirk Sheriff Court, he also admitted attacking a 16-year-old boy at a car park in the town in September.

Sheriff Peter Paterson told Wightman he had no alternative but to impose a prison sentence totalling 150 days.

Wightman's lawyer Ed Hulme said his client had spoken with his victim in the nightclub earlier in the evening of the attack.

However, he said he had no recollection of the events which unfolded outside due to the amount of alcohol he had consumed.
