Flags are flying at half mast at Scottish Borders Council's headquarters and Hawick Town Hall as a tribute to a councillor who died at the weekend.

Zandra Elliot, 73, served the Hawick and Denholm ward since 2007 and was a member of the Conservative group.

She died in hospital in Edinburgh on Saturday after serious heart problems.

Council convener Graham Garvie said her sudden death had been a "great blow to many who had the privilege of knowing her".

"This stylish lady was an integral part of the fabric of both Hawick and the council," he said.

"She will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with her family at this very sad time."

Michelle Ballantyne, leader of the Conservative group, described her as a "kind and honourable lady who valued integrity in politics".

"We will all miss her no-nonsense style and her feisty support of everything Hawick," she added.
