Dumfries and Galloway Council's snow claim rejected

A £1.7m claim made by Dumfries and Galloway Council to cover the costs of dealing with the severe snow in March has been rejected, it has emerged.

The application was submitted to the Scottish government under the Bellwin Scheme for emergency financial aid.

The bid was based on the amount spent clearing and repairing roads, but was rejected after most of the costs were deemed ineligible.

Council Leader Ivor Hyslop said the decision was a huge disappointment.

He has now asked Finance Minister John Swinney about other sources of funding.
